Herschelle Gibbs is an astonishing talent, so much so that he made his first-class debut for Western Province aged just 16 but it is a testament to his fallible character that Gibbs had to wait until he was 22 before he donned a South Africa shirt in earnest. Gibbs was born at Green Point, Cape Town on 23 February 1974, and the right-hand opening batsman is now an icon for many South African cricket fans due to a combination of superb fielding and aggressive and exciting batting. Gibbs is firmly established at the top of South Africa’s batting order, in Test cricket his record is phenomenal.
In just 70 Tests Gibbs has hit 14 tons and 23 50s amassing 5728 runs at an average of 44.40. In 2003 Gibbs came within a whisker of setting a new world record for the most successive ODI centuries, denied only by a wayward Alok Kapali delivery when unbeaten on 97. Yet surprisingly Gibbs’ ODI average is still only just over 36 although he has hit 19 centuries and 33 half-centuries in his 220 appearances
