Durham’s favourite son Steve Harmison is a rarity in the English game; he is a genuinely quick fast bowler. Towering well over six foot Harmison, who was born in Ashington, Northumberland on 23 October 1978, uses his frame effectively to create both extra bounce and good pace.
Harmison’s county, Durham, finally had to yield their best offensive weapon to England duty in summer 2002. Harmison consequently made his Test debut in August 2002 in the second Test versus India. The Durham right arm fast bowler performed so well that he found himself on his first full England tour over the winter of 2002/2003.
The Ashes 2003 was certainly an educational experience for Harmison who bowled creditably in the Ashes series itself. Harmison forced his way into the World Cup squad but unfortunately did not get a game. The lanky paceman claimed his first of four five-wicket hauls in Test cricket against Bangladesh in October 2003 and has now taken over 200 Test wickets, with best figures of 7-12 against the West Indies in 2004. He was a major figure in England regaining the Ashes in 2005.
In the one-day game Harmison played 46 ODIs and took 67 wickets at an average of 30.70 before retiring from one-day international cricket in 2007.
With the bat, Harmison has allowed the England tail to wag, on occasions, with a top score of 42, against South Africa, in January 2005.
